NDTR

What is a Nutrition and Dietetic Technician, Registered (NDTR), also known as a DTR? The terms are used interchangeably; it's your choice.

We've compiled a number of resource links from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) regarding the NDTR:

  • There are 2 pathways to the NDTR; Pathway 2 is a Bachelor's degree & DPD completion

What exactly does an NDTR do?

Essentially, the NDTR assists and supports the RDN in the Nutrition Care Process.

The Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics outlines the responsibilities of the NDTR quite well in the following document regarding Standards of Practice:

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: Revised 2017 Standards of Practice in Nutrition Care and Standards of Professional Performance for Nutrition and Dietetics Technicians, Registered. (2017). JAND. Vol 118:2, pp 317-326.e13. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jand.2017.10.004

We've summarized the basics here:

  • Under the supervision of the RDN, the NDTR:

- Participates in nutrition screening

- Provides support to nutrition assessment

- Provides support to nutrition diagnosis

- Provides support to nutrition intervention/plan of care

- Participates in nutrition monitoring and evaluation
